CARE & REPAIR

How to Waterproof Hiking Boots

Reviewed September 15, 2026Practical field guide

Separate membrane protection from surface water repellency

  1. Identify leather, nubuck or textile
  2. Clean first
  3. Apply an approved treatment evenly
  4. Let the finish cure

Do new hiking boots need to be waterproofed?

Not automatically. Many arrive with a factory-applied finish. Treat them when the maker recommends it or when clean uppers stop shedding water as intended.

Does waterproofing spray make hiking boots fully waterproof?

No. It can improve surface water repellency, but it cannot seal collar openings, damaged seams, punctures or a failed internal membrane.

Should waterproofing be applied to wet or dry boots?

Follow the treatment label. Some water-based products are designed for a clean damp upper, while other treatments require a dry surface.

Can the same waterproofing product be used on leather and fabric boots?

Only when the product explicitly lists both materials and the boot maker allows it. Leather, nubuck, suede and textile uppers do not all respond the same way.

How do you know when hiking boots need reproofing?

After cleaning, look for water soaking into the outer material instead of beading and rolling away. Also inspect seams and wear areas before assuming the surface finish is the only issue.

Put the advice into practice

After the stated curing period, mist clean water across several upper zones and watch whether it beads evenly. Inspect seams, flex points and collar openings separately; uneven wetting may call for another controlled application, while water entering through damage requires repair rather than more treatment.

Limits and cautions

Using the wrong wax, conditioner or spray can darken an upper, flatten nubuck, alter breathability or conflict with the manufacturer's care system.

THE TAKEAWAY

Successful waterproofing begins with material identification, not a universal spray. Renew the outer finish with an approved treatment, then reject or professionally assess boots whose leakage comes from structural damage.
